The Forbidden Kingdom (no spoilers)
Apr. 19th, 2008 08:05 pmSaw The Forbidden Kingdom today, and all I can say is... wow!
Without spoiling the movie, suffice it to say that it was pretty much on par with what I expected, which is a good thing. It's got the action that you would expect in a Jet Li or Jackie Chan movie, plus the physical and slapstick humor that Jackie Chan is noted for. Throw in a bit of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and mix in some of Sky High (because of Michael Angarano) and Forbidden is pretty much the result.
I've heard that audience reaction to this movie has been mixed... some love it, others hate it. I guess it's a bit more slapstick than what you would expect in a kung fu movie, and especially one with Jet Li, but it's about on par with what you would expect from Jackie Chan. And given that the executive producer is a martial artist who has worked closely with Chan in the past, I'm not surprised that the movie turned out the way it did.
One thing though... if you get the chance, however, you should definitely see this one in a digital theater if possible. I did, and I can only imagine how much of a difference that might have made over seeing it in an analog theater (because digital is from a hard drive, the picture is clearer and you don't have the distracting artifacts that you see in an analog picture).
Oh, and by all means do NOT search for the movie on YouTube (other than the trailer itself) because there are a few clips from the movie on the site. I learned that the hard way when I played one of the YouTube videos, but it only spoiled one scene (which already had some parts taken from the preview, so it wasn't too much of a spoiler). There was a slight difference between that and what I saw in theater, but it didn't ruin my enjoyment of the film.
Overall, though, two definite claws-up for this one. I'll definitely add this one to my DVD collection when it comes out later on. :)
