Job update part 2 and Superferry fiasco
Sep. 21st, 2007 08:26 amI've been rather busy the past day filling out forms, some online and some that you print out and fill in, to get things in order for me to start on 1 October. The catch is that I had an extremely short turnaround (aka 1 day suspense) to get everything done, so hopefully everything is in order. I'm sure Hickam's Civilian Personnel Flight will let me know if anything is missing.
Soapbox time: I've known for years that working for the Federal Government involves tons and tons of paperwork. In fact, I'm surprised that environmentalists haven't gotten more activistic against the Feds for cutting down on the amount of paperwork generated for just about everything, though I think some of it is being reduced by going online, aka virtual. Still, though, I'll bet few agencies can beat the government for resource usage.
And speaking of environmentalism, I heard on the radio that Gov. Linda Lingle attempted to hold a public Q&A session on Kauai last night, which apparently started off civil but quickly became a shouting, screaming match on the part of Kauai residents. Perhaps it's true that the forum was a way for Kauai residents to blow off steam, but I see one of two things happening from the fiasco:
(1) Questions have been answered and the protesters will calm down, or at least help make sure that the Superferry does what the state has said it will do.
(2) The protesters will become more vocal, possibly even resorting to vandalism of the vehicles and/or harassing those that use the Superferry. If they can't stop the ferry itself from operating, they would simply have to harass users to where they won't want to use the ferry.
I suspect outcome #2 is more likely and that the ferry may have to be halted in the interest of public safety. But I suppose only time will tell.
