Sep. 5th, 2006 10:10 pmIf I ever had a reason to be uber thankful that I live in Kaimuki instead of in Pearl City, Mililani or Waipio, today was it.
Earlier this afternoon, an Army transport vehicle carrying a crane underestimated the height of a pedestrian overpass and took out a chunk from the bottom of the overpass. That in turn led to HPD closing the ENTIRE westbound section of the H-1 Freeway near Aiea (yes, all SIX lanes). That led to the freeway becoming a parking lot backing up all the way to Kalihi as late as 7pm (when I headed home from Hickam).
Even looking at the traffic cams at this hour (10pm Hawaii time), it's still a major parking lot. Don't believe me? Click here to check out the traffic cams.
Even traffic headed toward the North Shore was also bumper to bumper. Bottom line is it looks like a LOT of West Oahu residents may be spending the night in town.....
Update: Just heard on the news that the Koko Head-bound lanes near the accident site will also be closing. I wonder if this means the freeway is going to be shut down tomorrow as well as overnight....
