Haven't updated this LJ in nearly a month... figured it's about time I got around to do some updates:

Today was the primary election for the Senate seat, one House seat and the Governor/Lt Governor seat.  By far, the most contested race was the Senate seat.  Incumbent Dan Akaka went up against House Rep Ed Case.  Akaka kept his seat, but it'll be interesting to see if he manages to still keep it for the general election in November.

In case you're wondering... yes, I voted.  But none of the candidates I voted for won (and I voted on the Democratic ticket).  You figure out who I went for.  For the record, the results can be found here.

The past couple of weeks were fairly busy, with me doing a fair amount of coding at work to get a new wind probability product up and running.  A couple of months or so ago, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) produced a wind probability product (i.e., http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at3+shtml/084534.shtml?tswind120) that shows the chances of a tropical cyclone hitting a particular location.  That concept got picked up on the JTWC side, and developing a project to bring a similar graphic online became the number one priority.  Of course, the product is still in testing and evaluation mode, so I can't link to the site where the products are available.

As I was developing that product, I was also helping cover an office at Ft Shafter to provide weather data.  And oh yeah... I also did whatever legwork I could to coordinate the removal of a computer system, which is scheduled to happen next week.  I had tried to reschedule that, but was unsuccessful.

So... suffice it to say I was nothing if not busy.  But I'll be burning 5 days of use or lose leave beginning Monday, so I'm going to -- as much as possible -- resist the temptation to check my work e-mail until I get back in the office the following Monday.

On a different note, I met another fur through [livejournal.com profile] technocollie ... unfortunately the fur's name eludes me at the moment.  I did, however, tell said fur about the AlohaFurs Yahoo group... said fur is living up in Manoa.

What else, what else?...

I got a chance to do some sound engineering (aka live sound mixing) at church a couple weekends ago.  Part of the service involved a live band, while part of it involved a video feed.  It was a lot of fun, but I definitely had to concentrate.  For me, the biggest thing was listening carefully and determining what I was hearing, what I wasn't hearing, and what I wanted to hear.  Even though sound engineering is pretty much a thankless process, it's not much different from weather.  A good sound engineer is invisible, for the most part.  Same thing with a good weather forecaster.  But make a mistake on either end... and suddenly all eyes are on you.

Last week, I also spent roughly $900 to completely upgrade my wireless network.  My router, which had been acting up, finally died to the point where frustration overwhelmed all else.  Most of the spending actually went toward buying a 750GB hard drive which, thanks to a couple of rebates, only cost me around $280 (is normally $500).  I also bought an N1 wireless router and two notebook cards... and the increase in net speed is fairly substantial.  More importantly, the wireless connectivity is far more reliable.

If I think of anything else, I'll post it... otherwise, back into the shadows of lurkerdom for now...
