Chicken Little (no spoilers)
Nov. 6th, 2005 10:47 pmSaw Chicken Little today. From what I understand it's Disney's attempt to follow in Pixar's footsteps, as it were, and produce a fully computer-animated movie.
From the time I saw the previews of the movie, I really didn't expect much. Yes, it's Disney, but sadly Disney's Feature Animation department has been steadily declining ever since The Lion King. It has a few potential bright spots like Mulan and Lilo & Stitch, but after Brother Bear Disney seemed to tank pretty quickly. Home On The Range could have been better, I think, but you could tell that the animation looked rushed in that one. And I don't even know or remember what Disney did after that (I think it did a version of The Christmas Carol, which was a direct-to-video release)... but for the most part it was pretty forgettable.
So like the Phoenix, Disney is trying to rise from the ashes with a computer-animated feature. And to its credit, the result looks like quite a bit of effort went into making the movie something that would appeal to both adults and kids. And, as it also turns out, the story does enough to keep you guessing just a little, but not very much.
I will admit there were several scenes that I enjoyed, and a few scenes that made me think, "Okay, now that is just plain WRONG!"
Chicken Little also reminded me of a movie that Disney's TV Animation department came out with 10 years ago... A Goofy Movie. I saw shades of AGM in CL, including the father-son relationship... Wallace Shawn voicing one of the characters (I kept thinking Principal Mazur at one point)... and a love interest for Chicken Little. But Chicken Little isn't out to impress his love interest... he's out to win his dad's approval.
Overall? I have to agree with one reviewer that Chicken Little is good, but it's not great. I think Disney has done better. But believe me, I think Disney could have also done far worse. Instead it pulled off a movie that was at least a little better than average. And it may just give Disney enough of a morale boost to do something better next time around.
33 days until Narnia and counting....
