Got a flu shot today (Friday), partly because of concern about a potential bird flu pandemic in the U.S. and partly because I'm required to have it. Last year I ended up not getting the flu shot, partly because I probably fell through the tracks due to moving twice within the same year.

I've been hearing differing opinions about whether a bird flu pandemic in the U.S. is imminent. I really don't know the truth myself, but I suppose it's better safe than sorry. Bird flu has been running fairly rampant across Asia and it has killed humans who consumed infected fowl, but from what I understand it hasn't actually jumped from bird to human... yet.

Still, if a pandemic did break out, Hawaii could be quite susceptible (as well as the U.S. West Coast) due to its accessibility from Asia. That said, it's probably prudent to get the flu shot anyway, even if the pandemic potential is being overhyped.

In other news, I've finished the first three Narnian chronicles (The Magician's Nephew, The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe, and The Horse and His Boy) and have started reading Prince Caspian. While I'm not trying to finish all the books before The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe comes out next month, I still want to immerse myself in the Narnian sotries as much as I can.

Interestingly enough, I've been hearing that a local Christian bookstore has been advertising the upcoming movie as well as the Narnian Chronicles. Perhaps this isn't too terribly surprising, since you can see some very clear Biblical and Christian themes in the books. For example, Queen Jadis being let loose in Narnia is analagous to Adam and Eve sinning in the Garden of Eden by eating of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. If you've read The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe you know that Aslan represents Christ. There was also a scene I read in The Horse and His Boy that reminded me of Elijah standing before God.

But enough theology for now.

I've been trying to some kind of aerobic PT at least 4 times a week for anywhere from 35 to 45 minutes a session. Still, the only real benefit I've seen has been a slight increase in endurance for the muscular fitness portion, but not for the 1.5 mile run (still averaging a very slow 14 minutes for the run... trying to get it down to 12 minutes or less).
