Did the tour guide bit again today... went to Kailua, then out toward Kaneohe, northwest toward Punaluu and Laie and made a stop at the Malae Kahana beach park. Spent about 2 hours there, then continued on toward Haleiwa and the famed Matsumoto Shave Ice store. For those who visit Oahu, if you ever get a chance to visit the store, and it's open, you should definitely stop in.

Shave ice, for those of you who don't know, is Hawaii's version of a sno-cone, but it is not a sno-cone, per se. The big difference between the two is that while sno-cones are made of crushed ice, shave ice is made by actually shaving slivers of ice off a larger block of ice. In both cases you can flavor the ice with syrup, but I think it's only here that you can also get it with either ice cream or azuki beans.

Saw something interesting in a Barnes & Noble bookstore tonight... a book written by none other than the (in)famous Simon Cowell, the harsh Brit judge from "American Idol." I thumbed through parts of the book and read about how Simon deliberately tried to torpedo his chances of getting dead-end-type jobs as well as how his first season of American Idol was. One thing I'll have to definitely give him credit for, though: he is honest, perhaps brutally so, but he is honest. It's funny how a lot of people rag on him (and he's even satired that with a guest appearance on "The Simpsons"), but if you read the comments by the finalists of this season, a lot of them actually like him because he's honest. Unlike the other two judges, Simon won't candy-coat his comments. And I'll have to admit, a Brit may be just what we need to put us haughty Americans in our place.

One thing I might consider down the line, if I decide to stay in the military for 20 years and then retire, is to come back here and become a tour bus driver. That would certainly keep me busy and active, but without the pressure of having to bring home enough to pay the bills.

This week has been a busy, but fun, week for me, and admittedly it hasn't been work. Still, I have a very sneaky suspicion that when all is said and done I'll need a vacation to get away from this vacation.....

Turn on the speakers in case you hear anything (and don't forget to look closely).....

Okay, is it just me or are we taking anti-terrorism just a bit too seriously for our own good?
