ASF, if you don't know, is a Shakespearean theater over in Montgomery. Often, but not always, it shows Shakespearean plays, but it's set up as what's known as a "thrust" stage (where one part of the stage juts out into the audience, and the audience can see it from 3 different sides.

Tonight (well, Saturday night, actually) I went to see a two-act play called "Venus de Milo is Armed" with a few of my flight-mates from class. The acting was fairly good, but the play's content was just way too preachy... mainly about/against land mines. I haven't really seen a play that sucked, so I gave it the benefit of a doubt. However, the last five to ten minutes of the first act just about killed the play completely, when it tried to make political statements at the expense of the plot. Needless to say, we pretty much voted unanimously to leave the theater at the end of the first act. If I were by myself, I might have opted to have given the second act a chance, but I didn't have that option... and I also didn't want to drag everyone else back for what would, or could, have been even more torture.

We spent the rest of the evening instead at a place known as The Brew Pub, not far from the base. It had a live band performing ("Mr. Whoopee") which was quite good. The place was pretty packed when we first arrived, but by the time we left, around 12:30-ish or so in the morning, there were a few diehard fans, but the place was pretty much dead. A couple of other minuses were that we opted to stay at the bar, so we ended up standing the whole time... but the bigger of the two minuses was that the place was filled with cigarette smoke.

Overall, The Brew Pub helped redeem the night, but the ASF suckered me for $10 for a play that was just too preachy and political for my taste.
