3 of 5 weeks gone for my course here, though in some ways it feels like it's been longer. Still, I've been able to avoid being chained to my room at night.
On one hand, it's extremely temping for me to stay put because I don't have a car here... thus, there's no real flexibility as to where and when I can go, particularly off-base. On the other hand, it's pretty easy to get stir-crazy if I don't at least go off-base once in a while.
That last part is what led to tonight. A few of us went to Marengo, an old, historic site in Montgomery. The $28 event included dinner and a few ghost stories surrounding the place. Haven't been able to find any specific website on the place, but will keep hunting and post any updates. Overall, however, it was very interesting, and definitely MUCH better than last week's play fiasco.
On somewhat of a downside: I've pretty much given up on meeting a couple of folks who live up in Huntsville. Full schedules and low finances have pretty much nixed our chances of meeting this trip. There's a chance I may make it back to the area, perhaps even as early as next year if I get an assignment at Keesler AFB, Mississippi, or maybe even back here in Montgomery instructing the class I'm currently taking. But that's way up in the air at the moment.
This also could be my last trip to the mainland U.S. for some time if -- or should I say when -- we go to war with Iraq. In the worst-case scenario, I would return on the 29th and go back to work on the 30th (yes, I know that's Sunday, but war doesn't take any breaks). After that I'd be looking at working 7 days a week... but like I said, that's the worst-case scenario. A better scenario would have me returning on the 29th, being able to take the 30th and 31st off, and go back to work on 1 April. But only time will tell what happens then.
