Assorted updates
Oct. 14th, 2004 11:08 pmAll kinds of stuff to write about since my last entry earlier this week. But let's start from the beginning.
On Monday I flew out from Omaha to Honolulu on emergency leave, with one stopover in Salt Lake City. The trip was pretty uneventful except for my being jetlagged due to a fussy baby sitting near where I was. That jetlag pretty much disappeared after the first day, though I have been finding myself getting a bit sleepy around 10pm local time (3am Omaha time) and getting up by 7am-ish local time (noon Omaha time). In fact, I'm a bit sleepy now but actually am awake enough to put in a brief entry before going to sleep.
My mom is doing.... okay. I've been visiting her in the hospital every day since I arrived. It's possible the doctor will be releasing her to come home this weekend, but honestly I'm not holding my breath. She's still very weak and eating sporadically, but I heard she'd been doing much worse over the weekend.
On Tuesday I went computer shopping. I ended up getting a Sony Vaio S250 (1.7GHz processor, 512MB RAM, CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, and only 4 pounds weight). It came with Windows XP Home installed but I decided to upgrade it to Windows XP Professional instead. I also managed to get lucky and (at least for tonight) find an unsecured wireless connection, so I have high-speed internet access for the time being.
I've been hanging out with a few friends since I came back, but because I've been spending a few hours every day at the hospital, I haven't done much other than computer shopping (for the most part). I'm also working on getting a humanitarian reassignment to Hawaii for the next couple of years or so but am also not holding my breath on that.
Overall, I would probably have to describe myself as moody. For the most part I'm fine but I've had bouts of stress and worry... not to mention I've also got a slight cold with congestion. I think I picked that cold up on the flight over even though I made sure there weren't any vents blowing air on me.
Weather here hasn't helped much either, with mostly light (aka Kona) winds and warm, muggy conditions. Then again, Nebraska's been getting 30-degree weather, or so I understand, so I probably shouldn't complain.
I'll post another update here when I have a chance...
