Update

Guess it's time for an update... unfortunately, very little in the way of good news, job-wise. Submitted for your perusal: Exhibit A.

The gist of the article: federal employee furloughs could not only continue next year, but there could also be layoffs in store. If you extrapolate that out, it means I could be laid off down the line, but obviously nothing is certain yet. Still, I figure it's prudent to plan now, before things go south.

I'm also not planning on a steady income from the Guard side either. More than likely I'll be gone within the next year to two years... but that's a separate story.

I'll have to take a good, hard look at what I'm spending and where I can cut back on spending and expenses. A lot of it will probably center around taking advantage of free stuff wherever possible. And it may also come down to limiting spending to stuff that's only necessary for survival... cutting out what I call "enrichment" or "quality of life" stuff. In other words, cut out stuff that's nice-to-have-if-you-have-the-money-to-burn but not absolutely necessary for survival.

The easiest stuff to cut is unnecessary travel, such as all leisure off-island travel. So at this point all furry cons for at least the next year to year and a half are off the table. (On a side note, the travel insurance on [livejournal.com profile] technocollie's cancelled trip to FC13 finally paid, so that helps a bit.)

One option that I'm also chewing on is cutting out going out with friends. That has a potentially big impact since I'm effectively the only driver in the group, but if things go south this will be on the chopping block.

Next year the lease on the SUV is up, so depending on how things go I may just return it and walk away without leasing anything new. Doesn't mean I won't lease or buy something else if things get better, but that's an expense I can cut out if necessary.

Any computer/tech upgrades will probably be on hold. I've upgraded some stuff now, but probably won't be upgrading further unless stuff actually dies on me.

Desperation measures would include cutting cable/internet/phone service and/or living on ramen or canned/instant food if necessary. Those are last-resort options, but certainly viable ones if things get REALLY bad.

In the meantime, it's wait and see.
