Hypermiling
Sep. 11th, 2011 04:20 amA few weeks ago, I read about hypermiling on a car review and was a bit curious to check it out. Turns out I already do quite a bit of hypermiling techniques with the Infiniti as it is (the Hyundai, not so much).
Because the QX is such a big car I tend to ease off the gas early when approaching red lights or in stop-and-go traffic. And I tend to accelerate slowly off the line, which is deliberate since the Hawaii drivers manual says that bursts of acceleration followed by heavy braking are both wasteful and dangerous, so if you use your accelerator and brakes with discretion you can drive safely and save money.
One caveat, though, is that everyone else around me doesn't hypermile. That means that there will always be those who accelerate hard and cut in front, especially if you're trying to leave any kind of cushion between yourself and the car in front to use engine braking.
Trust me, if I want to push the QX it will certainly respond, but fuel economy takes a nosedive as soon as I do that.
In mixed driving I've been averaging about 13 mpg, which isn't bad for something that big. Not to mention I could definitely be doing worse.
