Earlier tonight, when I was out with some friends, I found myself getting irritable at one point. It almost got into a nasty argument, but fortunately the moment passed quickly enough. I could easily see that I was still feeling the pain of [livejournal.com profile] evil_dwagon's passing.

Tonight, when I got home, I found that by listening to just one song, I was able to grieve, and with hope. I already posted a link to the song in an earlier entry, but the song is titled, "Homesick."

In a nutshell, the song allows me to grieve but with hope that I will one day see Furp again, and it does give me something to look forward to. But in the meantime, I will have to let the healing process continue and let life continue to go on, just as it always has.

The events of the past few days also reminded me of the ending to the MASH episode "Abyssinia, Henry". In that episode, which was the end of the third season, Lt Col Henry Blake (MacLean Stevenson), the commanding officer of the 4077th, got his discharge. He was given a going-away party followed by a big sendoff.

In the next scene, as surgeons, nurses and orderlies are operating on patients, Radar enters the room.

Trapper: Radar, put a mask on!

Hawkeye: If that's my discharge, give it to me straight, I can take it!

Radar: I have a message... Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake's plane... was shot down... over the Sea of Japan. It spun in... there were no survivors.

The reactions of the surgeons and nurses in the O.R. upon hearing the news reminded me of how I felt when I first heard about Furp's death.

It'll definitely take time for the hurting to stop because his death was so unexpected. It would have been completely different had he been, say, dying of cancer where you knew the end was coming. But it's my personal hope and prayer that all who grieve will be healed.

This morning I drove from my house in Kaimuki to the HIARNG 29th Brigade Combat Team (BCT) at Kalaeloa (Barbers Point). That drive typically takes around 30-40 minutes on the freeway, which is a pretty good distance considering this is in Hawaii.

A few hours after I arrived, I saw a breaking news story. A gasoline tanker had suffered a mishap on the freeway that caused it to leak gas onto the freeway, closing all lanes and creating gridlock in the Kapolei area. Even worse, it pretty much nixed any plans for anyone wanting to come into town since the Honolulu-bound lanes were closed for most of the day.

Apparently the incident had occurred around, or just before, I arrived at Kalaeloa but I didn't notice anything unusual on the freeway in either direction.

It looks like the lanes are now beginning to open, and fortunately for me I was able to take a few of the back roads and avoid the gridlock. But I can only imagine what the traffic must have been like earlier in the day. Oy.

Furp's recent death reminded me of a message that the senior pastor at my church gave some time ago. I thought I'd post a link to the message, then add my own comments. It put things a LOT into perspective for me.

Here's the link to the message: http://old.enewhope.org/sermon/notes.php?action=view&id=131

And my comments... )

Whee!

I'm on a posting spree tonight.

This has GOT to be one of the funniest outtakes ever recorded on film. Tim Conway is a comic genius. :)
