Oct. 27th, 2008 02:26 amOne of the downsides of shift work is that you tend to forget what day of the week it is since weekends don't matter. I had to remind myself several times that it's Sunday -- well, Monday now as I write this.
Saw "W." and "Sex Drive" last week. Capsule reviews on both follow (no spoilers):
"W." - Yes, it's an Oliver Stone film. But it appears to pull punches on George W. Bush, and it's also an hour shorter than what you might expect of Oliver Stone stuff (think "JFK", for example). From the movie, I think perhaps Colin Powell might have been the most level-headed guy on Bush's staff, but perhaps that's how he was portrayed.
"Sex Drive" - Lowbrow humor but a rather welcome diversion to the ongoing news of the upcoming Presidential election as well as the depressing news du jour. Apparently word of muzzle is that this movie is good. Yes, it's rude and crude. But it's also funny. Basic premise: boy meets a "Ms. Tasty" on internet chat and ends up going on a quest to find her. Along the way, he and his friend run into various stereotypical folks. It's perhaps just as much a statement on society as it is simply pure entertainment. If you like lowbrow humor, something along the lines of "Pineapple Express" or "Step Brothers," then you might like it. Otherwise, perhaps it's better to wait for the DVD.
Switching gears.... the more I hear about the candidates, the more I'm unsure who to go for. Based on who I think is the better leader... sorry, Dems, I would have to still go with McCain. But given a choice between having Sarah Palin or Joe Biden as veep, I would much rather have the latter. So I think my choice will end up coming down to which one of the two I want to consider more. And to those who insist that having McCain in office would be like having four more years of George W., well... [pause] I honestly have to say that that may not be a bad thing. Yes, you heard me right. Bush may have been unpopular, but it's hard for me to tell if what happened was because of his own decisions or because he had bad advice.
Off the political soapbox now.
We got some fairly heavy rain the past couple of days. Unfortunately it's a pretty safe bet that it won't ease our water supply problem, which is that we've basically been in drought long enough that it will take at least five years to restore the aquifers to normal. Any decent rain we get this year may not really show up for five years, so I won't be surprised if we get asked to continue to conserve.
Haven't seen "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" yet and at this point, I'm not sure if I want to. It was probably a good movie, and yes, it hit #1 at the box office two weeks in a row when it came out. But it seems like there are other, better movies out there... so this one may end up waiting until it comes out on video. We'll see.
