Oct. 18th, 2008 01:12 amSubject line says it all. Now to get caught up as best as I can....
Movies seen since may last posting: "Pineapple Express", "Igor", "City of Ember," "Eagle Eye," "Max Payne", "How To Lose Friends and Alienate People", "Death Race"
Capsule comments on each follow (no spoilers, hopefully):
"Pineapple Express" - Somewhat interesting to see James Franco (Harry Osborne) in a more comedic role. Not bad, a bit raunchy and somewhat amusing. There is a cameo song by a Hawaii singer (Brother Noland's "Coconut Girl") and Huey Lewis & The News sings the title track to the movie during the end credits.
"Igor" - Animated and somewhat cute. Plot is somewhat contrived and predictable but it's definitely kid-safe/kid-friendly and perhaps a movie for couples as well. I kinda like the twist on the old stereotypical "Igor, pull the switch!" deal. Natasha Bedingfield's "Pocket Full of Sunshine", which I've heard on the radio, plays during the end credits.
"City of Ember" - Basic premise is what happens when two kids try to escape a civilization that was deliberately sealed underground for 200 years. Bill Murray delivers an "okay" performance as the Mayor of Ember, but nothing really spectacular. This one also seems geared toward older kids (young adults).
"Eagle Eye" - Action-packed movie with Shia LaBeouf and a pawful of other celebs like Billy Bob Thornton (Mr. Woodcock), Rosario Dawson (MIB II), Michael Chiklis (The Shield, The Commish). Good but not great. Plot is somewhat reminiscent of "I, Robot" (and if you've seen the movie you'll know why I said that) and thus a little predictable. But if you like action first and plot second, this one's worth seeing.
"Max Payne" - Based on a video game. Unfortunately these types of movies, as I've found out, tend to have quite a bit of action but lack substance in terms of the plot. "Doom" and "Hitman" were similar... "Doom" was only memorable because of its "BFG" and "Hitman" was okay, but pretty much forgettable.
"How To Lose Friends & Alienate People" - Stars Simon Pegg ("Shaun of the Dead", "Hot Fuzz") and Kirsten Dunst ("Spider-Man 1/2/3"). Amusing comedy whose plot kinda sorta reminded me of "The Devil Wears Prada". Somewhat interesting to see Gillian Anderson in another role besides that of Dana Scully, kinda like how we saw David Duchovny in a role other than that of Fox Mulder in "Evolution" back in 2001 or so.
"Death Race" - Plenty of action and based only superficially on "Death Race 2000". Tons of gratuitous violence but plot is okay at best, if you ask me.
New tech stuff: Got a Sprint Touch Diamond and waiting for the Touch Pro to come out (projected availability in early to mid November)
Work stuff: Not much change, my former supervisor (an AF Lt Col) is retiring and assuming the same position as a civilian equivalent
I think that's plenty for now. Until next time....
