Saw "Tropic Thunder" and "The Rocker" today. My reviews on each a little later in this entry.

For [livejournal.com profile] ionotter and [livejournal.com profile] kadin_shino: sorry guys, I was hoping I could have you stay with me temporarily if you decided to come here, but unfortunately due to circumstances beyond my control, that's a no-go. There's the issue of not having any liability coverage if either of you get hurt while on the property, plus more importantly the proposal has been vetoed by a 2-1 vote. An alternative solution I'm looking into down the line is to maybe rent a 3-bedroom house or so if I can, preferably in Kaimuki or closer to downtown, move out of the downstairs apartment and rent that place out. Details are extremely sketchy right now though.... a lot of it actually depends on [livejournal.com profile] ionotter....

Switching gears... my reactions to the movies above that I mentioned...

"Tropic Thunder" - today was the 3rd time I've seen it since it opened. Suffice it to say I liked this one. I generally won't see a movie more than once if I think it sucked. What makes this one work, despite its apparent political incorrectness, is that it lampoons and satirizes everything that's wrong with Hollywood and disguises it behind a war movie. In particular, the movie doesn't pull any punches, and I suspect Ben Stiller (who directed this one) pretty much told the other guys to improvise and not hold back while still keeping in character. If you don't like seeing Hollywood make fun of itself, then don't go see this movie. If you don't like the main stars (Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr.), then yeah, don't go see this one. But if you enjoy the over-the-top antics and especially want to see Hollywood get its just desserts, then you might like this.

"The Rocker" - This one reminded me (somewhat) of "School of Rock", where an ousted band member joins a different band and has to come to terms with that. It was amusing, an entertaining 1.75-hour distraction, but obviously it's not gonna win any Oscars or anything. It wasn't great, but it was fun. But if you're into more cerebral stuff and don't like lowbrow humor, you probably won't like this one. But this one kinda lampoons the music industry as "Tropic Thunder" lampooned the movie industry. Trouble is, "The Rocker" seems to pull more punches, whereas "Tropic Thunder" didn't pull any. And there was somewhat of a feel of "Alvin and the Chipmunks" mixed in there too.... not a whole lot, but more like a "touch of tenderness".

In short, I liked both movies. "Tropic Thunder" is definitely one on my DVD-buy list when it comes out. "The Rocker" is one I would rather rent via Netflix, so in other words it's something I wouldn't mind seeing, but this one is easily a take-it-or-leave-it deal. Two claws-up for both.
