The Dark Knight
Jul. 18th, 2008 11:00 amWent to a midnight showing of subject above. My comments follow (no spoilers, hopefully):
At 2.5 hours, this movie is a bit of a bladder buster. But because of its nonstop action, you aren't constantly watching the clock to see if it's reached 2.5 hours yet. Most of the hype around this movie has been on the late Heath Ledger, as this was his last completed movie before his death. And I would even venture to say that this is Ledger's legacy.
Not having seen the other Batman movies, I don't know how Ledger's performance as the Joker compares to Jack Nicholson's performance as the same character, but I thought the former took the character and made it his own. If you ask me, I think Heath Ledger delivered a stunning role as the Joker, but I have to agree that it isn't necessarily Oscar-worthy. Considering the year is only half over, it's hard to say how he'll do when the Oscars come out next year. But I imagine he'll at least get nominated.
As far as the other characters go, they were fairly good, but Heath Ledger overshadowed them by his performance.
My verdict on this one.... two definite claws-up. Go see it.
Switching gears, I had an odd dream last night that seemed to combine parts of the movie with a nose for sleuthing. Let me sum up, as best as I can, as the dream's details are rapdily fading from memory even as I type:
I was a detective of sorts on the trail of a killer much like the Joker. But somehow (perhaps like Nicolas Cage's character in Next) I had the additional perception of being able to stay one step ahead of him, but just barely. It wasn't enough for me to catch him, but it was enough for me to avoid getting nailed myself. I didn't have any special armor or -- other than the enhanced perception -- powers. And I don't remember if I caught the killer or not. But I have a sneaking suspicion that my dream was some weird retelling of the above movie.
In the strange dream department, a couple days ago I had a short but vivid one. I was on death row, supposedly put there at random (kinda sorta like how the victim was chosen in Shirley Jackson's short story "The Lottery"). The method of execution would be lethal injection, and for most of the dream I found myself seriously thinking about the afterlife. I wasn't worried about death itself, though I was somewhat worried about getting my affairs in order. I don't remember many other details, but the dream ended before I would actually be executed... thanks in part to a full bladder that needed me to get up and go to the litterbox to empty it.
Perhaps I can chalk up the weird dreams to the full moon or something... who knows?
On a completely different note, and perhaps this was what might have sparked Weird Dream #2 above... I was reading the blog of animator Justin Wright, a Pixar animator who worked on "Ratatouille" and "WALL-E" before passing away in March of this year, and I was pondering what would happen if this blog were my last blog entry. Not that I'm going to cut my own life short myself, mind you... but if something unforeseen happened after I posted this entry. (Hopefully that doesn't happen for some time... the longer, the better of course...)
But just for the record, yes I believe in the Christian version of the afterlife. God willing, I hope to have that eternal life when my time on this earth ends, as I admittedly still have my doubts as to whether I have enough faith to be saved. But I certainly hope so, and it's also my hope that someday I'll see you in heaven as well (and no, I am not being facetious here).
