Got back home last night after some 14 hours of flights and connections. However, it seems as though my experience, especially with a couple of close connections, with US Air was more the exception than the rule.
I got to the Dayton airport around 10:30am (the flight was leaving at 12:18pm, but I had already checked in online so I wasn't worried about not getting to the airport on time). Turns out the flight was completely full and the airline was looking for volunteers who would give up their seats in return for a free round trip ticket. I was one of those paged as a potential volunteer and would have considered accepting except for the fact that had I done so, I would not have been able to have made it back and would have had to stay overnight in either Phoenix or Charlotte (neither of which appealed to me). So... I ended up boarding the flight to Charlotte, which was delayed about 10-15 minutes getting out of the gate.
We got into Charlotte around 2pm, which gave me about 20 minutes (or so I thought) to get from gate E1 to gate B3 (which wasn't bad, trust me it could have been worse!). Trouble was, the Charlotte to Phoenix flight was delayed due to late arrival of the aircraft and some maintenance. We didn't leave Charlotte until almost 3pm (flight was supposed to leave at 2:25), which put us into Phoenix a little after 4pm.
From there, I pretty much had to hoof it from gate B16 to gate B24, which were in separate (but adjacent) terminals. The final flight, from Phoenix to Honolulu, was still leaving on time at 4:36pm and I was able to make it while they were still boarding the first two zones (I was in zone 6). I almost thought about stopping by a concession stand and picking something up but decided not to bother since that would have eaten up too much time.
The Phoenix flight left on time and actually ended up getting into Honolulu 15 minutes early. I waited at the baggage claim for my stuff and was able to claim both of my bags.
technocollie picked me up and we headed over to Anna Miller's to get some food then go home.
Like I said, given the problems and complaints that have been mentioned on various forums against US Air, my experience seems to be more the exception than the rule. I didn't have any problems with any of my flights and I was able to get a somewhat decent amount of sleep on the flights.
Anyway, it's good to be back home. I'm not looking forward to going back to work tomorrow, but I'll pretty much be in and out of the office for the next couple of weeks or so as I finish outprocessing.
