Oct. 16th, 2006 06:52 pmIf you haven't already heard... a strong earthquake hit us this morning.
According to the news (and I'm going to reference a LOCAL newspaper since it's more likely to be accurate than any of the national papers), a 6.6-magnitude quake hit a little after 7 a.m. today. It shook homes and caused a statewide power outage. In fact, power was restored to my area in Kaimuki (East Honolulu, near Waikiki) only about an hour ago.
No fatalities or major injuries were reported and no tsunami was generated.
While the quake was strong enough to wake some people up, I was actually up and helping out at my church when it hit. That morning I was shadowing the sound engineer, hoping to get my chance at mixing a live band (it would have happened during our second service, which was scheduled for 11 am). Needless to say, that didn't happen.
I remember being on the platform and feeling it shake, as well as hearing the stairs (which sounded like metal construction scaffolding). The sensation lasted anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute, so I figured it had to have been a major tremor. Sure enough, the news confirmed the magnitude (at the time) as 6.5.
After the tremor I made a few phone calls, helping to flood our cell phone network (which was still up). Among those I contacted were
technocollie and
ionotter.
The rest of the day found us doing the service completely acoustically in the dark, with no mikes and only acoustic guitars and percussion... no bass, keys or electric guitar.
After the service I headed home, being doubly vigilant on the roads (it's amazing how many idiots either don't know or simply ignore the fact that when you have an intersection that's supposed to have traffic lights, and the lights are out, you're supposed to treat them as all-way stops).
For the rest of the afternoon I took a nap (not much else you can do when the power is out). Lani was busy hiding under the bed... I think the morning's earthquake spooked her so she was hiding most of the day.
Looks like the power went out for roughly 5 minutes or so just a little while ago, but hopefully it'll be more stable as power to the rest of the island is restored....
