Another Lani story....
Jul. 6th, 2006 10:35 pmNo, not another escapade. But still something worth telling, and it was enough for Lani to cry almost nonstop for about five minutes after I came home.
To set the stage, my jalousie windows downstairs open onto an approximately 4" wide ledge that is covered in the front by a wire screen. So, if you imagine the schematic as:
inside | jalousie window | <-- approx 4" space --> | screen | outside
Now imagine this: I come home after work, working out and bowling. I open the garage door, then lock it (learned my lesson from last night). I then open the inside door slowly, because Lani is usually resting right against the door so opening it slowly (it opens inward) gives her time to move so I don't hit her with the door. But this time there's no Lani... but I hear meowing coming from somewhere.
I look around and find Lani in the bedroom, sandwiched between the jalousie window and the screen. Both upper and lower jalousie windows are closed, and Lani is meowing forlornly.
At first I think Lani somehow got out of the house again, but quickly realize that she had nowhere to go as she was trapped between the jalousie windows and the screen (remember the 4" space?). I surmise that somehow Lani squeezed in between the jalousie windows (they had been left partly open when I left the house) and the wind blew them shut right behind her. She had no way to get out because the windows were shut, and the screen extends from the bottom to the top of the windows so she didn't have much, if any, room to claw her way out either. Thus, she was trapped and had to wait for me to let her out.
I don't know how long Lani was trapped, but given that her food was all gone when I came home, and she gets fed twice a day (6am and 6pm), my guess is that it happened sometime between 6pm and 10:15pm (when I came home).
Normally I keep clothespins on the jalousie mechanisms to keep the windows open but I guess the wind was just a bit too strong this time.
In any case, I think Lani was more than happy to be set free from her trap (which was purely unintentional, mind you). In retrospect, I probably should have seen something like that coming because Lani used to like to jump onto the bathroom ledge (which is a good 6.5' above the ground) and look outside (until I replaced one of the jalousie windows that Lani apparently broke while jumping onto the ledge).
I'm starting to wonder if perhaps I should invest in a kitty ledge that can hang over the windowsill and allow Lani to look outside without getting trapped again.....
