Happy Veterans' Day!
Nov. 11th, 2005 10:56 pmToday is one of the few days during the year where I feel a sense of pride in doing what I do. The other days, in no particular order: Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July and Discoverers' Day. Today we salute our fallen veterans, those who have gone before us, those who help preserve the freedoms that we have today... even if it seems we've been getting shortchanged on some of those with the War on Terror.
I will admit that I'm not a very big George W. Bush fan, but like him or hate him, he's in office for a reason: enough of the American public believed in him and what he had done from 2000-2004 to put him back in for a second term. I'm not going to comment on whether that was misguided, but unlike the controversy in 2000, "Dubya" was the clear winner roughly one year ago.
In any case, enough with the platitudes and patriotism for today. Because today was a federal holiday, I went to go see a movie with a couple of friends... "Zathura," done by the creators of "Jumanji." Overall, it wasn't bad, though the plot seemed a bit contrived and predictable. I'd say that "Zathura" was one of those movies that could have been much worse, but also much better, than it was. In a zero to 5 star rating I go right up the middle and give this one 2.5 stars (might be too generous?)
I also got a couple of other items today... picked up a Saitek X52 joystick/throttle system to replace my joystick for Flight Sim 2004. Didn't have to do it, but it was something I wanted to do. I also got a digital camera to replace the one I had before (which had somehow gotten misplaced, and I've pretty much give it up for lost). But this new one was cheaper than the one I had, has a higher resolution (4 megapixels versus 3.2) and an xD digital card with far more memory (1GB). Oh, and it also uses less batteries (2 AA versus 4 AA).
And a quick update on FC2006: it looks like I'll be able to go, pending the "official" result from my supervisor. I should know by early next week whether the con is a go or no-go for me, but I'm banking on a "go" partly because I have 22 days of projected use-or-lose leave for FY06 on the books... keep your fingers crossed!
