Dec. 1st, 2004 07:13 pmOkay... I am NOT a happy camper right now.
I came home from work to check e-mail and found out that someone had apparently spoofed a spam message using my EarthLink e-mail address as the return address. I immediately responded by forwarding the message to EarthLink's abuse desk.
I figure this will result in one of 3 things:
(1) My account will be tagged as a spammer and deleted/rendered inactive immediately.
(2) EarthLink will launch its own investigation and possibly catch the spoofer from the headers in the e-mail.
(3) I'll be told to ignore the whole thing but let EarthLink know if it happens again.
Of the above, I think (1) is a likely scenario but (3) might be a more likely one. Scenario (2) might happen but I seriously doubt EarthLink will even catch the spammer.
If my EarthLink account gets suspended or cancelled, then so be it. I haven't used that account that much (except for occasional dialup access), so it's not that big of a loss (unless I go somewhere where I can't otherwise get internet access).
Still, I don't like being spoofed. I suppose I could use PGP to digitally sign all of my messages, but I can't do that if I'm accessing e-mail via the web. Though it would be nice if there was a web-based PGP system available.
Any thoughts?
