Got a bit of a nasty scare today when I tried calling my sister at my mom's house to let her know what my travel plans were and got the answering machine instead. A call to her cell phone got her voicemail after one ring.

I started panicking and wondering if something had happened to my mom, especially since my sister had said my mom hadn't been all that responsive a couple of days ago, and left somewhat cryptic and panicked messages on my brother's and a friend's phones.

Another call to my sister got me an explanation and immediately soothed my nerves. My sister had left one of my aunts at home to help take care of my mom but had told her not to answer the phone for anyone. In the meantime, she had been sworn in (she was volunteering to represent abused children in court) and thus had her cell phone off. To further ease my panic, my sister told me my mom had been doing better... she put her on oxygen, which made her more responsive the past couple of days.

Call off the dogs, stand down, go to DEFCON 5...

With me being so far away and not having any real way to keep tabs on stuff, I was seriously frazzled thinking the worst. But when you only get bits and pieces of news, especially when you get bad parts, you really can't help but worry. I think perhaps now I understand, at least partially, what the families of servicemembers deployed to the Middle East must be going through.

In the meantime I've been told my orders will be ready Monday. That'll give me all day Monday to outprocess... then I can send out my car and fly back on Tuesday. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this happens!
