Stuph, various
Aug. 12th, 2004 06:07 pm2 weeks since my last post... why does that not surprise me, somehow?
So now I just gotta catch up, though the first part of August was mostly a blur. I don't remember much of that week other than doing another distance paddle -- even longer than the week before -- last Saturday. We went even further than the last time, so needless to say I was pretty tired when we finished.
Later that day we went to go see "The Village," which was a good movie... makes you think. In terms of plot/suspense, though, it doesn't really provide or solve any mysteries, not like "The Sixth Sense" did. But it does add additional items to the plot, which as a whole make sense. Overall, "The Village" was a good, though not necessarily great, movie. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars, or perhaps 2.5 out of 4.
This past week was pretty busy... went to get some paperwork taken care of in preparation for my move. I'm looking at moving out on the 26th or so, vacating the apartment completely by the 31st... then flying out on the 13th of next month.
On to something completely different...
I'm starting to seriously consider whether or not I want to stay in the military. The big, driving reason behind whether or not I want to stay in or get out is job performance. While I have been doing the job I've been slated to do, I haven't done anything unusual above and beyond the job, and consequently I won't receive any recognition for it, at least not on the AF side. To take a line from last season's American Idol, I "just didn't raise the bar."
So... to make it consistent, I'm also turning off any awards that might be coming down the Army side. That's because I think my record needs to be consistent, and if just doing the job doesn't earn me anything on the AF side, then why should it earn me anything on the Army side? I think any awards should be horizontally consistent with each other... for example, the Army and the AF have achievement and commendation medals (the commendation medal is, of course, higher). If I were to earn an AF achievement medal, I would have no qualms receiving an Army achievement medal. I would have issues if the Army award were higher, though.
And with the next assignment, it's hard to tell if even that will be a good fit. I don't think it will be, at least not in the initial section where I'll be working. If I don't get moved to a more scientific field, which is where I think I would best fit, then I'll probably get out after my next tour is over... and go and do research instead. I'm definitely not a leader, and I'm not going to waste my time trying to be one either.
I'm not yet ready to give up. But if the next assignment doesn't do anything for my career, then I think it'll be time to call it quits. And the decision would be at the 9-year mark too.
