Saw two movies today... "Dodgeball" and "Around The World in 80 Days". I actually wanted to see the latter, but a couple of others I was with wanted to see the former. As it turned out, we saw both... two movies in one night.

I've only done that twice before, as best as I can recall. The first was back in 1994, when I saw "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" then "Stargate". The second was a few months ago, when it was "Scary Movie 3" and something else that I don't remember any more (might have been "Brother Bear," but I'm not sure).

But without any further ado... my comments on both movies (minor spoilers at best):

"Dodgeball" was a mind-f***, hands down. It's billed as "A True Underdog Story", which I initially misinterpreted as being a "true story". Far from the truth... I also didn't expect too much from this movie, as I've seen sports stories before. But none like this. I also think Ben Stiller managed to redeem himself from the stigma that was "Gigli" -- and poked a good deal of fun at himself in the process. It's a funny movie with all kinds of gags and cameos, but my BIGGEST recommendation for this movie, is that if you see it, STAY ALL THE WAY UNTIL THE END CREDITS ARE DONE. Trust me, you'll know WHY when you do. And anyone who doesn't will probably be kicking himself/herself. Then again, perhaps seeing the very end of the movie (the end of the end credits) will give you nightmares...

"Around The World in 80 Days": Yes, it's Jackie Chan. And yes, he's got quite a bit of stunts in this. I do think Jackie is showing his age, but as stunt coordinator he can still at least stage some pretty good stunts for others to do, even if he doesn't necessarily do them himself. One big thing this movie was missing, though, was the typical Jackie Chan-fare of having outtakes during the movie's end credits. But from what I've been hearing, there's a Disney Channel special with an interview with Jackie, where several of the outtakes are shown. I'm hoping that special gets added to the movie when it comes out on DVD (and yes, I'll at least consider renting the DVD if not buying it).

Overall? Two thumbs (claws?) up, both movies. They aren't necessarily the best movies to have come out this year, but they are still worth watching... and they definitely weren't the worst movies to come out this year ("Garfield" appears to have beat that one out by a mile, and I still expect it to be worse than "Gigli," "Ishtar" and "License to Drive" combined).
