Jun. 7th, 2004 10:34 pmChecked out the Hale Koa Luau tonight. For those who are active-duty, reserve or retired military, it's a great show to check out. I'm not sure if you can get tickets to it if you're a civilian employee, but I don't see why not.
The website pretty much summarizes what happens during the luau -- and to be honest, it's pretty similar to the Paradise Cove Luau but at a fraction of the cost. Admittedly it's in a smaller location and has less activities, but you still get a good dinner, some activities and a good show. Having been to both, I would recommend the Hale Koa Luau if you qualify and want something relatively simple and easily accessible... and the Paradise Cove Luau if you want a bit more of the Hawaiian luau experience and are willing to spend more for it.
Glenn Medeiros hosted the Hale Koa Luau. If you who don't know who he is, he was one of the first "local boy[s] to make good" with songs that actually hit the Top 40 charts in the mid- to late-80s and early 90s (including a duet he recorded with bad-boy Bobby Brown, "She Ain't Worth It," which charted in 1990). He later returned to Hawaii to accomplish his second dream, earning a teaching degree.
There are a couple of other luaus over here, but I haven't been to them so I can't really vouch for them. One is Germaine's Luau and the other is the Polynesian Cultural Center, which gives you a tour of the center itself as well as the luau (you can't purchase the luau separately). The Royal Hawaiian Luau is another option, but I don't know how much this offers (probably similar to the Hale Koa, but I don't know for certain).
And the luaus don't come cheap either... just by internet surfing I found out that a typical luau could run you from $80-$150 depending on what you're going for. By contrast, the Hale Koa was only $33.50 per person, a pretty significant savings for a show with perhaps not quite as many activities or amenities as some of the fancier ones. Still, it was the best I found by far, timewise, location-wise, and price-wise.

araquan had a good time, but you'll have to see his LJ to be sure. :)
All in all, it looks like the past 3 weeks have been mostly a success. And for that I'm happy... and grateful.
