Nov. 12th, 2003

Yesterday (11 Nov) was Veterans' Day in the U.S., Remembrance Day in Canada. They're basically the same thing: remembering our war veterans and the sacrifices they made for us to have the freedoms and liberties we do today. For some, military service was not an option like it is today.

Went hiking with several friends. I'm not familiar enough with Vancouver to know exactly where we went, but one was a fairly popular hot springs area. Our original intent was to go hiking, then soak in a public hot springs pool, but we cancelled the pool part when we discovered that the pool was crowded. Instead, we checked out a waterfall near Hemlock. We hiked to a point where signs warned not to go any further. Everyone else went ahead while I stayed behind (I attempted to follow, but decided the path was too steep and slippery for me to even try to keep up). Still, even from a distance, the waterfall looked really cool. I imagine it must look really neat if parts of it freeze during the winter.

Afterward, we decided to hit a rec center in Maple Ridge. That place was pretty good, as it had a couple of swimming pools, sauna and steam rooms, and a hot tub. Turned out it was also cheaper than going to the hot springs pool.

I think my watch may be leaking though... I know I didn't change the battery, so the water-resistant seal should have worked. The watch itself appears to be working, but some condensation got in under the glass so the display is barely readable. I hope that clears itself by the time I leave here... I really don't want to have to get a new watch if I can help it.

This trip has been really good for me to just relax and unwind. Next year, if time permits, I'd like to spend two weeks up here. I don't think I could do more than that, though, as it would be too hard to go back to work afterward.
