Okay, now this is just wrong... but fun, in a rather sadistic sort of way:

One night, a hotel meeting room, about, what, 40 or 50 attendees, several dressed up in different fursuits/mascot suits, to socialize and celebrate (altlhough a week late) Halloween... what can you say?

For me, it was a lot of fun, and it was great seeing several friends again that I hadn't seen in a while. I even got to inflict a (probably now-infamous) can of Hawaii edition SPAM on a semi-suspecting attendee ([livejournal.com profile] nerfcoyote). Even better was that the can actually drew quite a bit of conversation, too. Some just found that can plain wrong.

One of the jokes I remember growing up with was that SPAM is not only the state food of Hawaii, but it's also the staple food of Hawaii. Seriously... if you look at several local recipes, you'll find SPAM being used in many of them. In fact, there's even The SPAM Cookbook. I remember growing up on it as part of breakfast (eggs, toast, spam), not to mention it was sometimes used in fried rice. Nowadays, you can even make what's known as SPAM musubi, which is actually very easy to make:

1. Take a slice of SPAM and stir-fry it with teriyaki sauce. It's up to you how much sauce you want to use.

2. Take some cooked calrose rice (the sticky kind) and mold it into a boxlike shape over the SPAM (a box-shaped hand sushi press works well here, too).

3. Wrap the SPAM and rice in nori (dried seaweed). That's it!

A variant I've seen has the SPAM in the middle rather than on the bottom. I've heard you can also buy SPAM musubi in Las Vegas. Nowadays, though, I hardly eat SPAM, not because I don't like the taste, but because it's got a lot of fat in it (and I've been trying to eat nutritiously... I think that reason may be documented in my previous LJ entries, so I won't go into details now).

Anyway, enough SPAM. Where was I? Oh, yeah, Howloween.

Like I said, I enjoyed it. And the organizers deserve a LOT of credit for putting something like this together. If I can get the time off next year, I'm definitely going to attend.
