California trip wrap-up
Jan. 29th, 2003 02:36 pmSo much stuff, so little time... where do I begin, really?
Flew in from San Francisco last night... got in pretty late, like around midnight or so, so I took an additional day of leave today. That was in my original plan since I knew my flight was arriving so late.
But let me start from the beginning, and to do that, I've got to go all the way back to the 22nd, when I flew in.
The flight itself was uneventful.
ionotter and I arrived into San Francisco Int'l and rented a car, after which we drove down to San Jose, checked into the hotel and headed over to San Jose Int'l, where we picked up
llyander.
Needless to say, the hotel was quite impressive. I think FC really outdid itself for this con, and from what I heard the hotel staff really liked this particular con (other similar cons apparently don't know how to treat hotels).
Thursday was spent doing shopping... found a shopping center up in Milpitas (McCarthy Plaza), which also had quite a bit of places to eat (Applebees, Stuart Anderson's, etc). Perhaps not too coincidentally, we also met up with a couple of other furs at Applebee's... unfortunately, I didn't get their names. (That kinda happened quite a bit this con.)
Friday through Sunday was the mainstay of the con... saw
windmist,
cobaltie,
evil_dwagon and
clipfox. (If you were there and met me, and have a livejournal account, lemme know! :) Although I spent close to $150 on this con alone, not counting the other trip expenses like airfare, hotel, food and rental car, I still came in way under what others spent. Also got some good pix which I hope to get developed soon... not sure when though. Maybe this weekend?
(Yeah, I really need to get me a digital camera...)
One of the best sketches I got in my sketchbook (got 3 commissioned this con) was done by
jonasbagel. It was worth it for the entertainment value of the sketch alone.
Also met up with
chipuni, a friend I originally met back in 2000 or so, when he was the con chair at the time. It turns out he's also one of the key wizards on one of the MUCKs I'm on... but I think those who know me know that I generally don't make friends with ulterior motives in mind. If I want to be friends with someone, it's because there's something I like about them to be a friend with 'em... I see anything else (artist, MUCK wizard, con staffer, etc.) as a fringe benefit.
One thing I will say though: I definitely feel blessed to have the circle of friends that I have. In the past, I've felt I don't deserve the friends I do... but then again, nobody really "deserves" them. That's what I think makes 'em special.
Anyway, it was a great trip... though I'm glad to be back, it looks like I could be getting suddenly quite busy at work over the next few days. We'll just have to see how it goes...
