Read through some friends' entries and found a few tidbits worth commenting on:

Saw this in [livejournal.com profile] tj_wolf's LJ and, after reading through it, found that quite a bit applies to me.  Not all, and I've had to learn some of the GSFs the hard way myself:  http://www.plausiblydeniable.com/opinion/gsf.html

After I fly back later today, I don't expect to go anywhere until the end of the year, when I could likely be facing a deployment to somewhere in Southwest Asia... that could easily include Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, the Horn of Africa... who knows?  In addition, my squadron's NCOIC sent out an e-mail (to the squadron) to NOT make firm flight reservations during our potential deployment windows, as last-minute changes are not uncommon and we will NOT be reimbursed for nonrefundable tickets.  With that warning in mind, I've decided that it's too risky to make plans for FC06 since my deployment window would start in either late December or early January and FC06 would be right in the middle.

The bottom-line upshot of all of this is to not expect me at any cons through at least next summer.  That also means that I probably won't have much of a social life either, except perhaps for church and meeting friends locally.  But given how busy work is, or certainly will be, over the coming months, the lack of a social life doesn't bother me all that much.  Or at least it doesn't bother me as much as it might have if I had more free time throughout the week but not enough free time to travel anywhere.

Hmmm!

Do they ever let you catch a ride with a C5 for a weekend? My airforce and army buddies of old said that it was possible, though they shouldn't abuse this. That was before 9/11 though.

Unfortunately it's not an issue of getting a Space-A flight but rather an issue of actually getting the time to go anywhere since my section is currently only one person deep (myself).

The other thing is that I could deploy at any time during my deployment window, which is what effectively nixes FC. And once deployed, I could be gone for up to 4 months.
