Oct. 28th, 2004 01:18 amGot permission to extend my emergency leave by a week, and with good reason.
Normally, I'd use my leave to take it easy, relax and maybe hang out with friends, but that's not happening -- much -- here.
I've been lucky to have at least some time -- mostly late at night -- to hang out with friends, but my day is mostly filled with visiting my mom in the hospital. She should be discharged soon, after which it's home hospice care. But preparing the house for that, as well as after she comes home, is going to be a major chore, because we need to clean out a side room so my sister can use that as a bedroom... home hospice care requires that at least one able-bodied person reside in the home.
That prep work is why I've had to extend my leave.
I also don't expect to have any real free time to myself once my mom gets discharged from the hospital because it'll be up to my sister -- and also myself, until my leave is up -- to provide the nursing care my mom needs.
Then, if my humanitarian assignment request goes through, I'll be either working or helping take care of my mom. I don't anticipate taking any real breaks, except perhaps for a couple hours here and there. Off-island leisure trips are definitely out... I don't want to deal with the possibility of something happening to my mom while I'm away on a trip, though it'll be a different story if the trip was strictly for business.
To say the least, the next few weeks to months will definitely be challenging. I'm not looking forward to them, but I'll have to deal with them all the same.
