Jul. 5th, 2011 02:00 pmBeen at work for most of June as well as the first part of July, so I haven't really had a chance to take it easy.
Until yesterday.
Saw Cars 2 and went to a 4th of July beach picnic at Kaka'ako Park afterward. Stayed until the end of the Magic Island fireworks show, although a tree ended up blocking some 90 percent of the show. But it was evidently a mixed blessing since during the middle of the show, sprinklers went off on an adjacent, lower hill that would probably have had a better view. Got some footage of the show but don't know how it came out. I may post pix of the better shots as time permits.
Speaking of time... the month of July is shaping up to eat up most, if not all, of my free time. I'm working most of the month, have Guard drill this coming weekend (which I'd normally have off) and helping out with a couple of church events since I'm one of only a handful of sound engineers left that can volunteer for our midweek (Wednesday) services. August should be a little better but I'll probably still be looking at a pretty full schedule still yet. Plus, FWIW I'm trying to avoid taking time off from work unless absolutely necessary. Our busy season runs from June through December so taking leave during that time is strongly discouraged.
Last week
technocollie told me something that I don't agree with. I'll mention what he said first, then I'll give my take on it. He was encouraging me to spend money to get some stuff that would be useful to have, but not something I really need. His rationale was that since I'm not going to FC, I can divert those funds to getting other things, as long as I stay below the original amount I planned to spend.
So why don't I agree with that logic? First off, I didn't cancel FC so that I could spend the money I would have spent there on something else. I cancelled it because I want to save the money for bills, emergencies and unexpected expenses. That means that unless I really need something, as in having a practical use for it, I'm not going to get it, no matter how cool or how useful it may seem... even if it means that later on I find that I actually do need it and end up paying more. Second, I want to build up my bank account so I can make FC 2013 a possibility, especially since there's the chance I could get deployed to the Big Sandbox later that year. Third, if I get furloughed or laid off for any reason, I want to have some kind of financial cushion to keep me afloat for the duration of the furlough or however long it takes me to find another job.
We'll see how the next few months shape up.
