Hotel For Dogs
Jan. 17th, 2009 01:16 amSaw this movie tonight, though I admit it wasn't one I really wanted to see (had a few others, including "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" that I'd wanted to see ahead of this one). But
technocollie convinced me that proceeds from the opening night profits would go to help support the ASPCA, so I went along with it.
And the movie was pretty much family fare... amusing, heartwarming and overall one you can take your kids to without fear of them picking up bad or abusive language. Although this was a Dreamworks movie, if you completely zoned out during the Dreamworks logo, you'd probably swear up and down that this was a Disney movie.
While there are gaping plot holes and the story is so predictable that a trained monkey could figure it out five minutes into the movie, that isn't where its charm lies. It's in the dogs (and, to some extent, the actors).
Overall, yes, I enjoyed the movie even though it wasn't my first choice to see tonight. The dogs are cute and the movie helps showcase the plight of our furry friends without being too preachy about it. It does take somewhat of a PETA-type stance as depicting animal control as ruthless and inhumane, however.
The one big thing I took away from this was that it reminded me of how much I love Lani (and how much she loves me in return). I was very lucky to have found her at the Humane Society, and when she came right up to me -- unusual for a cat -- wanting lots of attention, I knew I'd found the right pet for me. A nearly all-black kitty wasn't my first choice either, but there was no way I could deny her affection. And as I like to think, Lani adopted me more than I adopted her.
So, in a nutshell, if you're looking for a heartwarming family film, I would give two claws-up to "Hotel For Dogs". But it might not be for you if you're not much of an animal lover -- I'm more of a cat person than a dog person and I still liked this movie.
