Saw "Balls of Fury" tonight.

An interesting tidbit that some may find amusing is that the movie theater (Dole Cannery) only has a certain amount of characters that it can use for a movie title (apparently the limit is 12 characters), and they tried to squeeze in the entire movie title. The result:

"Balls of Fur"? Aren't those called "tribbles"?

Course, with furries, anything's possible. ;)

On to my quick review and comments on the movie (possible spoilers):
"Balls of Fury" is a "Dodgeball"-esque movie where a relatively popular sport (table tennis, aka Ping-Pong) becomes intertwined with the underworld. Unlike dodgeball, ping-pong is an actual Olympic sport, and I found it rather ironic that the movie would center around a sport being trained a la kung fu, because when I was at UCLA, I remember some of the Chinese grad students in the dorm playing ping-pong in the living room, and damn they were competitive! They would hit the ball so hard it would go flying at nearly the same rate that you see in the movie.

Now whether or not you would need to undergo a rigorous training program from a Chinese master to really master the art of ping-pong is probably taking things a bit far, considering that at least one source says it started in the UK in the 1880s. In 1988, it became an actual Olympic sport, so fantasy (aka the movie plot) actually blends with reality in that respect.

A couple of Hawaii ties show up in this movie as well: Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa ("Planet of the Apes") and Jason Scott Lee ("The Jungle Book," David's voice in "Lilo & Stitch"). I won't tell you who they play; you can check out either IMDB or watch the movie. :)

One word of warning: don't try to read rhyme or reason in this movie. It's mindless entertainment, yes, but as I've said before sometimes you need exactly that kind of diversion at times.
