AC 07, Day 2
Jul. 6th, 2007 03:21 pmOverslept a bit and missed the opening ceremonies. :P But I did manage to do some shopping in the dealers room for
technocollie and get something for myself as well. Most of tomorrow and Sunday will be getting stuff for myself now. :)
Went to Steel City Diner for a late lunch. I also went there yesterday. The place is roughly a block or so from the con and serves good food at very reasonable prices. From what I heard from both the restaurant's and con's staff, Anthrocon ran them out of food last year, so this year they were prepared. I also ended up picking up a shirt from the place because it had the diner's name on the back but also had an Anthrocon 2007 logo on the front. Yeah, once word spread throughout the con those shirts were sold out in probably a matter of hours.
Picked up a panini sandwich from a restaurant downstairs in the hotel lobby. It was one of the few places where food wasn't exhorbitantly expensive, and the staff appeared very friendly and professional, even going out of their way to help customers. Someone else brought in a 2/3-eaten pizza with a piece of plastic in it... apparently a plastic wrapper must have gotten into or on the pizza when it was baking. He got his money back AND a fresh pizza to boot. The same place burned my sandwich the first time, so I got a free bag of chips for being willing to wait for the second one.
It's too bad more places don't do this for their customers. I think a Biblical proverb sums it up best: "if you have to choose between a good reputation and great wealth, choose a good reputation" (Prov 22:1).
Earlier tonight, a couple of fursuits were entertaining a couple of other guests who I assumed were mundanes (yes, they're still around, even when the con is in full swing) in the lobby. Those antics were very amusing, almost mascotlike. Personally, I think that should be a hands(paws?)-down criterion for anyone wanting to dress up in a fursuit... that s/he should be able to act like a mascot, especially for anyone who doesn't know or isn't familiar with the fandom. Not only does it make for great photo opps, it really puts furrydom (IMHO) in a much more positive light.
Ran into
evil_dwagon in the lobby, who was apparently taking some time out for the con from living and working in Borat's home nation. Good to see he's going well, but how ironic it is that he's now working for the Air Force. :) We'll see if I end up working for the Navy.
All in all: yes, I'm having fun. Yes, I'm spending a fair amount of time in the hotel room. But I'm getting out and about, and interacting with other furs whenever I can. Unfortunately, I don't know as many furs at this con as I did at FC, but what is cool is that several furs have recognized my character. But I am NOT wearing a necklace of rosary or prayer beads, dammit! :) It's a kukui nut lei. :)
Anyway, I'm gonna head out and mingle a bit more, so will close for now and post more later...
