Catching up on stuph
Aug. 28th, 2006 11:37 pmLooking at my last post, it's been a week since I last updated this LJ, and I've got stuff to write about, so here goes:
(insert sound of beans rattling in a tin can as the kitty ponders)
Caught a cold last Tuesday that gave me a scratchy throat for a couple of days and a nagging cough that lasted through the weekend. I think it's getting better now, but this kind of cough -- mainly from postnasal drip -- can be tough to shake.
Last Friday found me on the other side of the island, over at Bellows AFS, for our squadron Hail and Farewell (we say hello to those arriving and bye to those departing... or 'aloha' to both :) That was fun, and there was some karaoke as well (no, I didn't sing, partly because I wouldn't have been up to it). And I still cringe whenever I hear someone pronounce it as "carry-oh-kee". I'm not sure if the word itself is East Asian or European in origin. I know it isn't Japanese because every time "karaoke" is written, it's been in katakana, used mainly for foreign (loan) words.
After the Hail and Farewell, I went to see "Beerfest" with
technocollie and a few other friends. I didn't expect much when I went to see this movie, but I figured mindless comedy would be amusing. And I remembered Kevin Heffernan from another movie he was in ("Sky High" as Ron the bus driver). Overall, the movie is pretty much over the top, a la Animal House. And it's got all kinds of sight gags and spoofs. It's admittedly short on plot, but when you're talking about a good lager, what else matters? :)
technocollie insisted that I'd seen another Broken Lizard movie ("Club Dread", 2004) with him and
ionotter, but I honestly have no recollection of having seen that movie. Then again,
technocollie did mention that I hadn't been feeling well that day, so I may have zoned out during the movie... I don't remember.
Today I think I got a taste of what happens when your blood sugar drops significantly. I had been running on lack of sleep over the weekend and had to partly fight to stay awake at work today... though a couple of programming projects that came up will probably keep me entertained over the next few days now. In the late afternoon I had to drive into downtown to sign some paperwork, then head back out to Pearl Harbor to do some PT.
PT consisted of a 45-minute combined run/jog/walk interval training, where I would run for a certain distance then walk for a certain distance. Near the end of the workout, I would run for approximately 500 feet then walk for 500 feet (the track was actually marked off like that), and dodge other runners/walkers on the track as well as kids' soccer teams (who practice from something like 4 to 6 pm).
After the 45-minute workout came a mock PT test. That's where you do 1-minute pushups, 1-minute crunches and a 1.5 mile run. I opted to do the run first since I was already soaking wet from my workout and I think I was sufficiently warmed up. Then I rested and did pushups, then finally crunches.
I found myself a little woozy driving from PH to Hickam to take a shower and change. I also remember feeling really tired to where I initially planned to go through a drive-thru to pick up dinner so I wouldn't have to get out of the car. I even zoned out a bit and momentarily forgot which locker I had put my stuff in when I got out of the shower.
Fortunately the shower rejuvenated me enough that I was more than awake to go pick up food then go home.
