Odds and ends
Dec. 20th, 2005 10:20 pmAdvance warning: this post will be pretty much going in all directions, and I'll be doing some venting in the process. You've been warned!
So far no takers on my FC room post, though I did get a potential nibble (you know who you are... and if you didn't see that post, it may be because you aren't on my friends list).
Apparently Trillian has a couple of security holes in icq where anyone can message you regardless of what kind of security settings you set up (i.e., don't accept multi-recipient messages from users not on my contacts list). Either that or I'm missing something. I let my Trillian Pro membership expire, and I really don't see a good reason to renew it because I can still use Trillian Pro... I'm just not able to get updates or support. But I digress. In the past week I've received several icq messages saying little more than 'hi' (someone tried to hit on me, then I found out that I hadn't updated my gender on the icq website so I suspect the person, who was supposedly in Turkey, thought I was female).
Soapbox time: If you send me an icq message and I don't know who you are, I will most likely ignore it until I know or can find out who you are.
FC06: Since I'm a good 2500 miles away from the West Coast, any travel I do is gonna require advance planning if I want to get a good airfare. That means planning no later than mid-November. Ergo, I'm going to FC06. But it seems that while a pawful of my friends are going, many more are NOT going than ARE going. That in turn begs the question as to whether going to the con is worth it. Nothing against the con itself... I've enjoyed the events, and the hotel is great. But cons are also about meeting people. Sure, I can make new friends but it's nice to see old ones too, especially if I only get to see them in person once a year.
Moving: It's still a year out, and I have no clue where I want to go, but as much as I like being here, there are a couple of stressors that I've alluded to in previous posts that I really want to get away from on a more permanent basis. One of them is from a friend who calls me almost every weekend to see if I'm doing anything. Normally, I'd enjoy the company but not when I have to go out of my way to meet the other person, then drive to wherever we're going, then pay for virtually everything, it gets old really fast... especially if meeting up wasn't my idea in the first place. Now if the other person lived closer, was willing to drive or pay, then it would be a different story. But I don't see any of that happening anytime soon. So... I've been trying to fill my weekends with other stuff so I can legitimately say I'm not available... or alternately, I just ignore the phone calls.
The other stressor? It's family-related, and I'll leave it at that.
Went to a farewell lunch at the Kaneohe MCBH Officers' Club today. They have a really nice pasta buffet for around $9. It's kinda like a Mongolian bbq but with pasta. You load up a plate with veggies and any sauce (like pesto), then tell the cooks what meats you want (meat, chicken, seafood), what sauce you want (marinara, alfredo) and what kind of pasta you want. (Sorry
krag_carbine and
ionotter ... I just found out about this place earlier this month, otherwise we could have probably done it at some point!) Oh, and did I mention the great view you get of Kaneohe, Kailua and the MCBH golf course?
Haven't seen "Aeon Flux" or "King Kong" yet but those aren't all that high on my priority list of movies to see. One that I'm curious about, though, is "Over The Hedge," due to open late next spring or so. It's definitely a furry movie... hopefully it'll be better than Madagascar. And speaking of which, I saw in the IMDB that Madagascar 2 is in the works (why oh why?)...
