Went out and bought a new portable a/c today to replace my current ailing one.  The old one was a 12,000 BTU a/c that drew some 10 amps of power and frequently tripped a 15 amp circuit breaker.  The new one is smaller (9,000 BTU) but draws less (8 amps), so the circuit should hopefully stay intact a bit more.  This one also evaporates the water so isn't as likely to drain as much... and if too much water DOES accumulate, it'll actually pump the water out.

Not only that, the new a/c was half as much as my previous one.

Admittedly 9,000 BTU isn't much but it's more than adequate for my bedroom.  If I move, though, I might end up having to get a larger a/c unit, but I'll worry about that when the time comes.

Switching gears to the icky stuff...

Tomorrow I start a 3-day string of mid-watches... from 1700 to 0500 the next day (or from 5 pm to 5 am, for those of you unfamiliar with 24-hour clocks/military time).  I think my biggest challenge there will be to stay healthy, because I think shift work used to do numbers on my immune system.  I've found that I've generally been able to stay healthiest when I'm on admins.

That shift work is what prompted me to seriously look for a new a/c unit.  I need to get uninterrupted rest during the day so I'll be ready to go on shift tomorrow night.

That said, I obviously won't be at Anthrocon '05, but hope that those who go have a good time!
