Prius, Infiniti or no change?
Mar. 23rd, 2005 10:20 pmHere's a rather interesting (to me, anyway) dilemma I have:
I recently posted that I'm leaning toward replacing my current Camry with a 2005 Prius. But last night
technocollie suggested that I get the Infiniti G35 instead... partly because he and his mom just bought one last Saturday.
Supposedly the upsides of the G35 are that it's a luxury car that contains a lot of features that you see only in REALLY expensive cars, like Mercedes and BMWs... it's got a V6 powertrain that gives you a really good shot of power when you need it... and it's an overall fun car to drive.
But I could just as easily, especially after having thought things through overnight, come up with reasons NOT to go for the G35:
1. MUCH higher operating expenses, starting with the initial cost ($40K versus slightly under $30K for a Prius). The G35 also doesn't get NEARLY as much gas mileage as the Prius, though with a smaller tank I'd probably have to fill up at least once a week.
2. Today, when I drove around base at both Hickam and PACFLT, I didn't see any other comparable luxury cars... most were lower-end cars where even the Prius would be an attention-getter despite its relatively low price. I don't want a car that'll get a lot of attention... I simply want a good passenger car that can also carry cargo.
3. I can't afford to operate the Infiniti at the same level that I would be operating the Prius, or even my current Camry, at... on the road 7 days a week, driving around to pick up and go out with friends... probably enough to put 12,000 to 15,000 miles on the car easily within a single year. One of the reasons I was even considering a Prius was because of its fuel efficiency.
4. The G35 would be a high-maintenance car... if I wanted to keep its resale value I would have to get it detailed once a month, not something I'm all that fond of doing. You could probably make a similar argument for the Prius but because it's significantly cheaper and would depreciate faster there wouldn't be as much pressure to keep it pristine.
There's also a very convincing argument for me to keep my current Camry. The two main reasons I wanted to upgrade from it were that the car bottoms out over bumps with a full load of passengers and it's not as fuel-efficient as some of the hybrids.
That said, I can probably live with the car not being all that fuel efficient... I've talked about getting another car before, but never did. This year I'm more inclined to take action but it's not like I have to get it done this year.
Thus, the cheapest solution for me would be to change the springs on the car and see if that does anything. If I still find myself dead-set on a new car, then maybe consider the Prius.
Bottom line, though, is that I really don't need a luxury car like the G35. Sure, it's fun to drive and it looks nice, and probably even feels nice inside, but I just don't need it. I don't care if I should treat myself to a luxury car while I can... I've never had a luxury car and am really not all that eager to get one.
What do you think? I have a feeling the vast majority of those who read this would agree that I don't need the G35... but perhaps the Prius might be worth it. My Camry still rides pretty well, but maybe it's time for a change? <shrug>
