Assorted odds & ends from last week:

Last Wednesday, Hawaii's third "American Idol" finalist advanced to the final 12. I watched the show Tuesday and managed to get in 7 votes via phone during the voting window. Considering how hard it was for me to get in to vote before, I'm actually a bit surprised I got in as much as I did.

The rest of the week was pretty uneventful, though a couple of issues surfaced at work:

- Biggest one is the issue of weather support. This one's a BIG can of worms... here's the issue, in a nutshell: All the service branches are undergoing "transformation," "reengineering," , but whatever you refer it to, it means the same... we're doing more with less. The upshot is that my specific office used to have more bodies, but we don't anymore, so we can't give the Army the same level of support they used to have. Actually, it looks like they want even more dedicated support because they're taking on new responsibilities. BUT... the Army is still trying to figure out exactly what they're going to do, so right now we're firing shots at a moving target.

- Second issue is my moving. Right now I'm slated to leave here for Nebraska at the end of June, but that may be extended depending on when my replacement shows up (since there needs to be some overlap). I might also try to take some leave in early July, before I report to Nebraska, but I'm not sure if I'm going to do that or not. I may also try to hit Anthrocon, but to be honest that one's a long shot at best.

Other goodies:

Checked out the Honolulu Festival (http://www.honolulufestival.com) on Sunday, which showcases Japanese culture. That took me on a partial walking tour of Waikiki, which I don't get to see much of. Hopefully I'll be able to get some pix of the afternoon/evening parade posted later this week.

Not much else to report on, other than that the hard drive on my desktop (the ShuttleX) seems to be acting up. Unfortunately, I suspect the HD is out of warranty and could be dying on me, but I'll know as soon as the system finishes scanning and correcting errors on the disk (I should know for sure in the morning).

That's it for now... more later!
